Film : Sorry to Bother You (2018), Salt of the Earth (1954)

1) Cassius Green’s character (and those of his coworkers and friends) experiences a number of forms of both exploitation and alienation throughout Sorry to Bother You as he goes from working at a call center, to a power caller, to finally joining with the union and fighting back against the company owner. Discuss some of the ways Cassius’s experiences throughout the film either support or challenge the arguments made by Marx against capitalism. Feel free to use whatever aspects of the film or pieces of Marx’s arguments you wish when developing your answer. Include at least one direct quotation from the film and from Marx in your answer.


2) Do you think the struggle between the mine workers and their families against Delaware Mining in Salt of the Earth is closer to the anarchist political theory of Emma Goldman, or the socialist ideas of Marx and Lenin?
